After a long period of working with the authorities we finally got a young girl housed after she fled domestic violence. I’ve been working with her through free your mind as a support worker and it’s been a really trying process, it’s hard not to get emotionally involved so you have to always keep in mind the end outcome you want to achieve for the young person. Like me, she was a child of domestic violence and she had many issues before entering a relationship and becoming a victim directly herself. She has come on in leaps since i first met her, like many young people she’s a little wayward so I had to show her some tough love, but only for us to get the best outcome for her. This week we finally got there, after going from bed and breakfasts, meetings, phone calls and being in a refuge, she is now housed for the foreseeable and can look towards her future. Once settled we talked about the journey to this point and I told her that she should be proud of herself, I know she didn’t think she had it in her to keep going after everything she’d been though, she was so thankful for all of the help too that it was hard not to feel overwhelmed that we had come to the end of such a gruelling process.
I guess I’m sharing this because it feels good to know that the work I do makes a difference and can change lives in such a tangible way. Although she got caught in the cycle, it’s now broken. Theres still work to do, but most importantly she is safe and now free to live a happy future.
