Mentoring

About the scheme

Offers support for young people aged 16-25 who have previously accessed our service and has been recommended for further support post counselling. Mentoring is a structured and trusted relationship between a caring adult and a young person who wishes to receive support and accountability to reach goals.

Mentoring is more directive than counselling, provides guidance, motivation as well as emotional support but isn’t specially about their experience of Domestic Abuse, instead it helps the young people work on things like their personal development and support, careers, mentoring also provides directive feedback which does not occur in a therapeutic space.

The primary role of a mentor is to develop a personal and positive rapport with a young person, and this involves consistent meetings and ensuring the meeting times are enjoyable and comfortable. Additionally, mentors should work with the mentee to establish goals. Examples of goals could be making better grades or improving on something like attending college or a career goal. Mentors should assist mentee in creating life action plans. Another responsibility for mentors is that they act as a cheerleader, coach and advocate. Mentors should even sign post young people to helpful resources in the community.
